What is ShortenFor.Me?

ShortenFor.Me is a URL shortening and link management platform. You can turn any long URL into a short, shareable link in seconds — and track how many people click it, where they're from, and what device they're using.

Whether you're sharing links on social media, in email campaigns, or in print, ShortenFor.Me gives you clean short URLs and detailed analytics on every click.

Do I need an account to shorten a URL?

No account is needed. Simply paste your URL on the homepage and click Shorten URL. Guest links are valid for 30 days from creation.

Creating a free account gives you 90-day links, a personal dashboard to manage all your links, and click analytics. It's free and takes under a minute.

How do I create my first short link?

It only takes a few seconds:

  1. Go to the homepage
  2. Paste your long URL into the input box
  3. Click Shorten URL
  4. Copy your new short link and share it anywhere

If you're logged in, you can also create links directly from your dashboard by clicking New Short Link.

How long do short links stay active?

Link lifetime depends on your account type:

  • Guest links (not logged in): 30 days from creation
  • Free account links: 90 days from creation
  • Premium account links: Never expire — active as long as your subscription is active

You can see each link's expiry date in your dashboard.

Is ShortenFor.Me free to use?

Yes — there's a generous free plan with no credit card required. Free accounts include:

  • Up to 10 short links
  • Links valid for 90 days
  • Basic click analytics
  • Dashboard to manage all links

Can I sign in with Google, Microsoft, or Meta?

Yes! On the login and registration pages you can sign in with one click using your existing Google, Microsoft, or Meta (Facebook) account — no password required.

Note: social login buttons are only shown when those providers have been enabled by the site administrator.

URL Shortening
What types of URLs can I shorten?

You can shorten any valid http:// or https:// URL — web pages, blog posts, product listings, social profiles, documents, images, videos, and more.

We do not permit shortening of URLs pointing to malware, phishing pages, adult content, illegal material, or anything that violates our Terms of Service. Such links will be removed without notice.

How do I create a custom short code? (Premium)

Custom short codes let you create branded URLs like shortenfor.me/my-brand. This is a Premium feature.

  1. Log in and open your dashboard
  2. Click New Short Link
  3. Paste your destination URL
  4. Enter your desired code in the Custom Short Code field
  5. Click Shorten URL

Rules: 3–20 characters, letters and numbers only (hyphens and underscores allowed). Codes are first-come, first-served.

Can I edit a short link after creating it?

Yes. From your dashboard, click the pencil icon next to any link to edit:

  • The destination URL (where the link redirects to)
  • The link title (shown only in your dashboard)
  • The short code itself — Premium users only
  • Active / inactive status

Changes take effect immediately.

How do I delete a short link?

From your dashboard, click the trash icon next to the link and confirm the deletion.

Warning: Deletion is permanent and immediate. Anyone who visits the short URL afterwards will see a "Link Not Found" error. There is no undo.

Why is there an advertisement before my link redirects?

Free accounts display a brief interstitial advertisement for 2 seconds before redirecting visitors to the destination URL. This helps us fund the free tier.

How do I generate a QR code for my link? (Premium)

QR code generation is available to Premium subscribers.

  1. Go to your dashboard
  2. Find the link you want a QR code for
  3. Click the QR code icon in the actions column
  4. A 250×250px PNG QR code will appear — click Download PNG to save it

The QR code encodes your short URL, so it will redirect the same way as clicking the link.

Is there a limit on how many links I can create?
  • Guest users: Subject to rate limiting (20 links per hour per IP)
  • Free accounts: Up to 10 active links total
  • Premium accounts: Unlimited links

If you reach the free limit, you'll need to delete existing links or upgrade to Premium.

Analytics
How do I view analytics for my links?

From your dashboard, click the chart icon next to any link. This opens the full analytics page for that link, showing all available data.

You can also see a quick click count directly in the dashboard table for each link.

What analytics data is available on the free plan?

Free accounts get the last 30 days of analytics data, including:

  • Total click count (all time)
  • Daily clicks chart (bar graph)
  • Device type breakdown — desktop, mobile, tablet
  • Browser breakdown — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, etc.
  • Top referrers — where your visitors are coming from
What extra analytics do Premium users get?

Premium subscribers unlock the full analytics suite:

  • Complete click history — no 30-day limit, all-time data
  • Custom date ranges — 7 days, 30 days, 90 days, 1 year, all time
  • Country-by-country breakdown with flag icons and bar charts
  • Monthly clicks chart — trends across months and years
  • Weekly AI-powered insights emailed to you every Monday
Are my link visitors tracked individually?

No. We record anonymous, aggregate data per click. We collect the device type, browser, approximate country, and referring URL. We do not:

  • Build profiles of individual visitors
  • Set tracking cookies on visitors' browsers
  • Link clicks to individual user identities
  • Share visitor data with third parties

IP addresses are anonymised after 90 days by removing the last octet — e.g. 192.168.1.23 becomes 192.168.1.0. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

What are the AI-powered weekly reports? (Premium)

Every Monday, Premium subscribers automatically receive a personalised email report covering the previous week:

  • Total clicks across all your links for the week
  • Your top 5 performing links with click counts
  • Day-by-day click chart
  • Country and device breakdown
  • AI-generated insights — trends, observations, and recommendations

Reports are sent to your registered email address. No setup required — they start automatically once your Premium subscription is active.

What payment methods do you accept?

We support three payment gateways to make it easy to pay from anywhere:

  • Stripe — Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and most international credit/debit cards
  • Razorpay — UPI, Net Banking, Indian debit/credit cards, Paytm, PhonePe, Wallets (recommended for India)
  • PayPal — PayPal balance, linked bank accounts, and cards (available in 200+ countries)

How do I upgrade to Premium?
  1. Create a free account or log in
  2. Visit the Pricing page
  3. Select your plan (monthly or yearly)
  4. Choose your preferred payment method
  5. Complete payment — Premium is activated instantly
How do I cancel my Premium subscription?

You can cancel anytime with no questions asked:

  1. Go to Manage Subscription
  2. Click Cancel Subscription
  3. Confirm the cancellation

Your Premium access continues until the end of your current billing period. You will not be charged again after cancellation.

Do you offer refunds?

Yes — we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscribers. If you're not satisfied within 30 days of your first payment, contact us at admin@shortenfor.me for a full refund. No questions asked.

After 30 days, refunds are not available except as required by applicable law.

What happens to my links if I cancel Premium?

Your links remain active until the end of your paid period. After it ends:

  • Links revert to a 90-day expiry from their original creation date
  • Links older than 90 days from creation will expire shortly after downgrade
  • Custom short codes remain active while the link is still valid
  • Analytics history is preserved but advanced features (country data, full history) are locked
  • Your link count reverts to the 10-link free plan limit

We recommend exporting any important analytics data before cancelling.

Account & Security
How do I create an account?

Visit Create Account and choose your sign-up method:

  • Email and password — enter your name, email, and a password. A verification link will be sent to your email before you can log in.
  • Google, Microsoft, or Meta — one-click sign-in using your existing account. No separate password required.
I didn't receive a verification email. What do I do?

First, check your spam or junk folder. If it's not there:

  • Wait 2–3 minutes — emails can be delayed by spam filters
  • Try to log in — you'll see a "Resend verification email" link if your account is unverified
  • Make sure you entered the correct email address when registering

If you still don't receive it after 10 minutes, contact us at admin@shortenfor.me.

How do I reset my password?

Visit Forgot Password, enter your email address, and we'll send you a password reset link. The link expires after 1 hour.

If you signed up with Google, Microsoft, or Meta, you don't have a separate password — use those social login buttons to sign in instead.

What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and should I enable it?

Yes — we strongly recommend enabling 2FA. Two-Factor Authentication adds a second layer of protection. Even if someone obtains your password, they cannot log in without also having your phone.

To enable 2FA:

  1. Go to My Profile & Security
  2. Click Set Up Two-Factor Authentication
  3. Scan the QR code with Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, or any TOTP app
  4. Enter the 6-digit code shown in your app to confirm
  5. Save your 8 one-time backup codes somewhere safe

From that point on, every login requires both your password and a fresh 6-digit code from your app.

I lost access to my 2FA authenticator app. How do I log in?

On the 2FA verification page, click "Lost access to your app? Use a backup code". Enter one of the 8 backup codes you were given when you set up 2FA. Each code works only once.

If you have also lost your backup codes, contact us at admin@shortenfor.me with your registered email address and we will help you recover access after verifying your identity.

How do I change my name, email, or password?

All profile settings are managed from My Profile & Security:

  • Name — editable directly on the Profile page
  • Password — use the Change Password section (requires current password)
  • Email — contact support at admin@shortenfor.me to change your login email (requires identity verification)
How do I delete my account?

To permanently delete your account and all associated data, email us at admin@shortenfor.me with the subject "Delete My Account" from your registered email address.

Account deletion is permanent and irreversible. All your links, analytics data, and personal information will be removed. If you have an active Premium subscription, please cancel it first to avoid further charges.

Troubleshooting
My short link shows "Not Found" or "Link Not Found". Why?

This usually means one of the following:

  • Link expired — Guest links last 30 days, free account links last 90 days
  • Link deleted — The link owner permanently deleted it
  • Link deactivated — The owner or an admin set it to inactive
  • Typo in the URL — Short codes are case-sensitive; double-check the characters

If you own the link and it appears in your dashboard but visitors get a 404, check whether the link is marked as Active in the edit screen.

My short link is redirecting to the wrong URL.

If you own the link, you can update the destination at any time:

  1. Go to your Dashboard
  2. Click the pencil (edit) icon next to the link
  3. Update the Original URL field with the correct destination
  4. Click Save Changes

Changes take effect immediately. If you don't own the link, contact the person who shared it.

I'm getting "Invalid CSRF token" when creating a link.

This is usually a session or cookie issue. Try these steps in order:

  1. Refresh the page and try again — CSRF tokens reset on each page load
  2. Clear browser cookies for this site, then reload and log in again
  3. Disable any browser extensions that might block cookies (VPN extensions, privacy blockers)
  4. Try in a different browser or device

If none of these work, please contact support with your browser and operating system details.

Analytics show 0 clicks but people are definitely visiting.

A few reasons this can happen:

  • Bot / crawler filtering — We automatically exclude obvious bots and web crawlers from click counts
  • Browser pre-fetching — Some browsers speculatively pre-fetch links, which may not register as human clicks
  • Cache — Try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R or Cmd+Shift+R) on your analytics page
  • Ad blockers — Some privacy extensions can interfere with redirect handling

Analytics update in real time. If clicks still aren't registering after a genuine visit and 5 minutes of waiting, please submit a support ticket.

I can't log in with Google / Microsoft / Meta.

If a social login button isn't working:

  • Confirm the button is visible on the login page — it only appears if enabled by the admin
  • Allow pop-ups from this site in your browser
  • Clear cookies and cache, then try again
  • Ensure you're not blocking third-party cookies (required for OAuth flows)
  • Check the email on your social account matches your ShortenFor.Me account email

If the issue persists, use password reset to set a password, or contact support.

My payment failed. What should I do?

If your payment doesn't go through, try the following:

  • Verify your card number, expiry date, and CVV are entered correctly
  • Ensure you have sufficient funds or available credit
  • Check with your bank — many banks block international online transactions by default. A quick call can resolve this
  • Try a different payment gateway — if Stripe doesn't work, try PayPal or (for India) Razorpay with UPI

For Indian users, Razorpay with UPI is the most reliable option. For international cards, Stripe is recommended.

If the issue continues, email us at admin@shortenfor.me with the error message you received.

The page loads but the short link redirect isn't working.

If visiting a short URL shows the homepage instead of redirecting:

  • The Apache mod_rewrite module may not be enabled on the server — contact your hosting provider to enable it and set AllowOverride All
  • The .htaccess file in the site root must be present and readable
  • Check that the short code in the URL is correct (case-sensitive)

This issue is typically a server configuration problem, not a user error. If you're the site owner, see the Troubleshooting section of the README or contact support.
